Slow Type Design Methods
With Martin Majoor: Jan. 2023
Slow Design in type, it’s all in the details:
This course is aimed at junior type designers looking to take their design skills to the next level. In contrast to other courses at the ILT Academy and elsewhere, this course will be analog in format, focusing on a slow and deliberate approach to type design in which details play a prominent role. The aim is to provide an in-depth view to why letters (roman, italic, sans) look the way they do. This approach fosters a thorough understanding of how letterforms are built and how they relate to one another. The course reflects the Slow Design approach taken by its instructor, Martin Majoor, who is recognized internationally for excellence in type design, and for a career dedicated to the highest levels of originality and craft.
About the course
The course is organized over 2 intensive weekends. Drawing will be via pencil and paper, with feedback focusing on the micro-cosmos of type design. The purpose of the slow pace is to bring about a contemplative approach to type design that is grounded in originality of thought and approach.
