I LOVE TYPOGRAPHY

Mastering Web Typography

Are you a designer or developer with a working knowledge of good typographic practice, but want to take that further, and understand the very latest type and browser technologies? In this highly interactive two-day workshop taught by Elliot Jay Stocks — who was the driving force behind Google Fonts Knowledge, and Adobe Fonts’ former Creative Director — you’ll explore OpenType, variable fonts, and fluid type scales, and learn how to implement them with intent in your web-based projects.

On Saturday, we’ll take a detailed look at OpenType and all of the not-so-obvious options available to us, from alternate glyphs to optical sizes, and explain how these features aid in choosing and pairing robust typefaces. We’ll explore the opportunities presented by variable fonts (and colour fonts), and learn how to harness the power of modern CSS to use fluid type scales.

During the Sunday session, we’ll focus on actually implementing all that we’ve learned about OpenType, variable fonts, fluid type scales, and typography as a whole. We’ll also delve into the implementation pitfalls to watch out for, and consider techniques to optimise the way fonts are loaded and type is rendered.
