Eye Magazine's review of Emigre 70, ‘The farewell tour syndrome’, suggests in addition that Emigre’s force came from a combination of design and argument that might be diminished by one too many farewells.

Even though I grew up in the 80s, tolerance for post-modernism is a gift I have yet to receive. This Emigre look back-issue might be a good starting point getting into it though. Thanks for this post!

I agree that the colors were nice, but the quote with black background really stung my eyes. Did not like that.
The layout of this post was very simple, and I could focus on the text.

I picked up 'Thinking with type' by Ellen Lupton, who you recommend to read. Looking forward to reading it.

Dan, in regard to the quality of the book, I too found it lacking. But that’s become pretty common in the American book market, and given the state of the economy I think it understandable. As for Rudy’s choice of articles, he explains in the introduction that he deliberately picked articles he was involved with and that would show off Emigre type. It would be easy to argue against this, or just about any possible combination of work from Emigre, but because his choices form a compelling narrative that can expand one’s historical view of the period I thought that he had done pretty well.

I'm also one of those people that didn't have the luxury of reading Emigre the first go 'round. I started collecting back issues and diving into recent history, discovering how deep the rabbit hole really goes. It was inspiring to see a small group intellectually challenging the norm. Being a professional today, I'm thankful those walls were broken down and lines redrawn. I'm glad to see #70 is a true collection and not a remix.

Just prior to Issue #69, I had the chance to sit down and have lunch with Rudy and Emigre contributor Kenneth FitzGerald. To hear the stories between the two and ask them any questions I wanted was amazing. I don't think I realized until a year later what a privilege it truly was.
