Reading Class of 2008

MA Typeface Design

A new web site to showcase the work of this year’s students of the MA in Typeface Design at the univeristy of Reading.

You can also download a PDF group specimen—the same one that will be distributed at the ATypI conference in St. Petersburg next week.

You can learn more about the course over at the Uni of Reading web site. They also have an MA in Book Design!

  1. Thanks for the Link! It is nice to see an image of Milvus, too. I think that Emma’s italic is fantastic. My personal favorite.

  2. Awesome! I can’t wait to participate in the master’s program! Soon… soon…

  3. Wow really nice stuff. They are just now offering an Advanced Type Design class at my school that you can take after you’ve completed your four previous type classes. I’m not entirely sure what the class is about but I’m pretty sure it’s along the lines of creating your own typeface. I can’t wait :)

I like Michael Hernan’s font, at first I thought it was only good for headings but I printed his page from the pdf and I am liking it.

  5. Wow: it’s things like this that make me want to be a professional student. How cool is that book design program??

  6. Dan
I like Emma’s italic too. I do hope they post the work of former students.

  7. Anyone else here who’s going to Reading next year?

  8. Great works, I hope that we will learn something similar in our academy. If not, I’ll learn it anyway! :)

But really amazing works and..from just students. Amazing!

  9. I’m starting at the MATD in about three weeks. I’ve been keeping a weblog on the preparation for Reading for about two months now, it’s here: http://cavedoni.com/reading/

Thanks for the link. Interesting reading. Good luck at Reading. I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful time.

Hyde is awesome. I love that “y”—reminds me of Scala and of Slimbach’s text faces—and the specimen book is a work of art in itself.

  12. I do hope they post the work of former students.

You can access a few of the specimens from past years via a Google search.

  13. I do hope they post the work of former students.

I’ve been told that this will be the case, although it might not happen super quickly. We don’t want to share the limelight straight away, do we ;-)

If you look at the design (all those numbers down the left-hand side), you can guess what is in the cards.

  14. Thanks for the links. I have been looking into joining the course at Reading for sometime now and this has spurred me on even more. Cheers again!

  15. The specimen booklet from last year’s class at Reading is available here: http://www.ultrasparky.org/work/other/14_faces.html

The booklet contains contact info for all of us if you’re interested in any of the work we did, or are doing now.

  16. Why did I ever decide to major in Graphic Design?

  17. Jeff, there is nothing wrong with majoring in graphic design! Back when I was an undergraduate, I majored in graphic design, too. The world’s two typeface design MA programs are graduate programs that you enrol in after you’ve finished your first degree.

  18. It has been a great year. My time at Reading has been an inspiration and I cant begin to tell you how saturated with type knowledge you can become. The fun part is seeing the development of everyone elses work - the iterations and complete overhall (in the case of Andrews Hyde is like version six, each one different from the last).

@wes. Its all about the AirTrap’s getting more air into the counters so you can make the type miniscule.
