TDC2 Winners Announced
I wouldn’t usually post today, but the Type Directors Club (TDC) has just announced this year’s winners of TDC2 2008. Among them is Kris Sowersby’s sans serif, National. I’m sure you’d all like to join in congratulating Kris, and the other winners.Winning entries are divided into five categories, and here is a taster from three of them:
Type System / Superfamily
National —Kris Sowersby:
Display
Ventura—Dino dos Santos:
Text / Type Family
Fondo—Cristóbal Henestrosa:
Just a sampling of the selected winners. There’s also the very good Japanese display face Logo Jr Black (I especially like the Katakana!); and of course Palatino Arabic by Zapf and Nadine Chahine.
Just about all of the entires have PDf specimens, so fire up your printers to fully appreciate them.Be sure to check out the other winners on the TDC2 2008 Winners page. Do you have your own favorites among the winners?

Congrats to all the winners. They’re well deserved!
I’m sure it’s been mentioned before, but you should write about Japanese Typography, John. Seeing all those characters in Logo Jr makes my head spin!

Alright! Great to see a Mexican winner! We don’t usually shine on the international scene. Great work to all and thanks to John for the post. In order to support Mexican design I must now go ahead and purchase Fondo (*Crosses his fingers and hopes it’s for sale*)

Congratulations Kris!
I like the fonts you mentioned in your article, Johno, but I also like Sable and Burgues quite a bit. Nice to see people who work so hard get some deserved accolades!

Thanks for the heads up! This is great.
I agree with Hamish M about an article about Japanese typography. I’ve seen some great japanese letterpress printing work and learning more about type in Asia would be fascinating. Being Korean-American, I’ve often struggled to find information and designers of Korean characters, too…
Getting back to the list — I love the ones you featured and I’d really love to see Presidencia more up close. Mommie is quite intriguing.

I just went to the TDC website and saw that there are two Mexican designs there! (Fondo and Presidencia). COOL!
Although…I don’t think Presidencia reflects Mexican Government. Nice typeface though.

Congrats Kris!
Oh and that Fondo looks looks nice too!
:) Good Stuff!

I love Fondo! I must have it. I also liked Palatino Arabic, but I did not like the Black Logo. I couldn’t discern easily the character strokes.
I agree with all others. An article on non-English/western character typography would be enjoyable.

I have an article in draft, entitled Spare a thought for Japanese type designers. I’ll try to get it finished once I’ve completed my move; and it’s my birthday today, so I’m taking a half-day off :)

fondo, fresco and Al Rajhi are awesome.. i like them a lot.. :)
i’m not sure about Palatino Arabic.. i know that a great efforts were used to create it, but when i see it i can’t link it to Palatino.. Frutiger Arabic was a much better matching project by the same type designer: Nadine Chahine..
wondering what Tim Holloway will say about it.. ;)

Thanks. In fact my best birthday present was a typeface—one I’ve wanted for ages.

Yes, I’d love to hear what Mr Holloway thinks of Palatino Arabic. If anyone knows Tim, please ask him to drop by.
For those who don’t know Tim Holloway, here’s a good place to start.

Which one? And why do you like it? Hope you don’t mind my interrogation…

Congratulations Kris! Great work and keep those beauties coming!
Fondo is such an amazing font. I saw it and immediately threw it into my “To buy” list.
Johno
この日本のtype foundryは本当に最高じゃん!ちょっとびっくりした!漢字も使えるから『買うかなー』と思ったけど〜ぜったい高い。。。Ughhh what to do, what to do.

Taking of slabs, have you checked out H&FJ’s Archer?

As it’s a gift from one of the foundries, I’d rather not say, but I did also receive a gift license of Rosadelia from a regular iLT reader, which I’m very happy with.
Cody
I guess if you break in down into cost per glyph, then the Japanese fonts are cheaper ;) Logo Jr Black is certainly close to the top of my shopping list; just under Arnhem and a certain script from a certain Mr Paul.
Alejandro Paul
Yes, congratulations on Burgues. It’s exquisite.

Great work, Kris.
Love that Fondo too!

Sure, break it down to priced per glyph, but then again how many glyphs would you actually use :P

Congratulations, Kris - well deserved! All of those typefaces are sure well crafted. I wish I had a handwriting like Ventura.
